Evidently, when it comes time for Jesus to evaluate and reward ministry done in his name, there will be a lot of disappointed people.

A. Lot.

There is a huge distinction between what a person claims to believe and what they actually embrace. Profession does not automatically equate with possession. Jesus talked about those who would stand before him one day and attempt to justify their activities on the basis of their motivation. “Did we not cast out demons, etc. in your name?” Jesus’ response is sobering: “I never knew you!”

In another story, a certain group of men tried to replicate Paul’s ministry results by duplicating his tactics. It didn’t end well for them.

Our desire to care for the sheep cannot be the basis for our hope of actually helping them. And claiming the title of shepherd does not necessarily mean we have been called into partnership with The Shepherd.
