WWJD? What would Jesus do?

Not the right question.

While it is not wrong in the least to desire to live and to act as Jesus would, the problem with the way this mantra is applied is in thinking that we can duplicate his heart.

Dallas Willard has suggested that the definition of discipleship is “becoming who Jesus would be if he were you.” The paradox is that he IS you (and me) in that he lives in us to be manifested by us.

Our shepherding of others is not a matter of us trying to figure out what the Great Shepherd would do and then trying our best to emulate him. The role of under-shepherds is to allow the Shepherd to manifest himself through us, by partnering with him in the work of shepherding.

In other words, to be Jesus with skin on.
