I think the legitimate barriers to shepherding can be summed up in two words:
Sordid gain is that which is disgraceful, dishonorable, base.
Financial gain is the most common application, but it can also include the desire for power, recognition, acceptance.
Sordid gain is that which does not align with the heart of the Great Shepherd.
Trying to re-present the Shepherd’s heart without being connected to the Shepherd’s heart is sordid. Attempting to serve in his name without abiding in him is sordid. And expecting the flock to respond to the voice of any other shepherd is – well, it’s crazy. They will not follow an imposter.
Let’s not be the barrier.
